What students can do to be more sustainable
Making some small changes in your choices and behaviors can have huge impacts on your personal sustainability.
Your daily choices and behaviors have a big impact on the amount of resources you use and the amount of wastes you produce. Every product you consume, from a cup of coffee to a new car, has a footprint on the environment. You can make a difference based on what you buy, how you use things, and how you dispose of things at the end of their usefulness. Here are some ways you can green what you buy, use, and dispose of at UCLA and off campus.
Live on campus
Aside from transportation to and from campus, living on campus is likely more sustainable. Because of sustainability and efficiency measures, the residence halls are likely more efficient and produce less waste per person than off-campus housing. Also, many places to eat and shop at UCLA have a commitment to going green.
Get Involved
There are several student groups on campus that focus on environmental issues.
Getting Around
Transportation is a large part of our everyday environmental footprint, especially in car-centric L.A. Luckily, there are many environmentally conscious ways to get to class and to navigate our fair city.
Reduce and Reuse
Reducing the amount of energy and resources you use is the most efficient way to downsize your personal environmental footprint. There are simple little changes you can make that really add up!
Buying Green Stuff
Put your dollar to work! There are many options on and off campus to buy products that are have a lower environmental impact than the conventional alternatives.
Recycling
A large portion of our day-to-day waste is recyclable. As long as they are clean, all the following materials can be recycled: paper, cardboard, metal cans (including aerosol containers), plastics #1-9 (including plastic bags) and glass. Here are some ways to recycle at UCLA:
Greening Your Techonology
Electronics devices account for 70% of the toxic waste in our landfills. Here are 8 ways to green your technology from Earth 911. Check out Earth 911 for more information about going green!
Water Conservation
It's no secret that water is limited in Southern California. Here are some ways to save water on campus and at home.
