Whenever Parent's Weekend or Commencement rolls around, the UCLA Events Office and the Events Subcommittee work hard to ensure that everything runs smoothly and sustainably.

How to green your campus event: the Sustainable Event Handbook.

The Sustainable Event Handbook was produced in Spring 2009 and is the a result of the hard work of the Events Subcommittee.  The subcommittee is made up of members of the many event related departments on campus. The committee was brought together with the intention to make on campus events more sustainable. The web handbook is meant to be a resource for student, staff and faculty event planners; educating them on such things as waste management, food and beverage, and conference coordination. The committee has also developed a new volunteer program called the UCLA Green Team, where volunteers are trained to staff recycling stations at events to ensure maximum diversion. Through the development of our recycling station system, as well as the coordination with the Green Team, we have achieved an over 60% diversion rate at such events as Parents Weekend and Staff Picnic. They hope to expand their efforts to reach all events throughout campus, and eventually work towards the goal of holding zero waste events.
